Leading international human rights lawyer and author of Crimes Against Humanity: The Struggle for Global Justice, Geoffrey Robertson QC, was the keynote speaker at a lecture at The College of Law in London on 9 November 2010 in memory of Indonesia's foremost human rights activist. When human rights defenders are murdered with impunity and the state fails to bring the perpetrators to justice, what can be done to ensure accountability and improve the protection of those most at risk? What support can be provided by international lawyers? What is the role of regional mechanisms, international tribunals and universal jurisdiction procedures? These issues and more will be explored in this lecture in memory of Indonesia’s foremost human rights defender, Munir Said Thalib, who was poisoned in September 2004 while on a flight to the Netherlands to start a masters degree course in law at the University of Utrecht.
